Αustralians who don’t like this development should examine the record of modern Greece’s assassinated first governor Ioannis Capodistrias, who was sworn in as head of the revolutionary new state on the (for Australians) iconic date of 26th January (1828). The “international community” of the day did not recognize this inauguration and modern Greece did not become internationally “respectable” until Capodistrias had been killed and replaced by a Bavarian king. Apart from promoting tribute to Capodistrias himself Australians might also adopt the idea of promoting Captain Arthur Phillip as “the Capodistrias of the global south”. https://halva.proboards.com/post/3270 Arthur Phillip was admittedly no great distinguished diplomat but in a modest way he shared many of Capodistrias’ notable virtues. A policy along these lines would be greatly preferable to being “soft” on racism and (more accurately) Islamophobia. Capodistrias was a pioneer in opposing prejudice against Jews and extending the same rights to Jews as were recognized for Christians. That was what was required in 1828, and is required today.
