Thank you for the information about Hawke, who is a key reason for why I left Australia. The Canadian “Patriot” journalist Matt Ehret has an interesting and unusual perspective on these issues, including appreciation of the role that the Russian Czar Alexander II played in supporting the Northern side in the American Civil War. From my Australian perspective Matt is too one-sided in his reading of the virtues and vices of Americans vs Brits. But he is more an ally than an opponent. As far as I can work out, the Queen was just trying to be objective. She admittedly did not take away Sir John Kerr’s knighthood, which had been bestowed before the controversial events. I don’t know what the protocol would have been on that. But she never knighted his sponsor, Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, either.
