Lighthouses as monasteries

Wayne  Hall Edward Gibbon came to see the decline and fall of the Roman Empire as “the triumph of barbarism and religion”. If the “second coming of Christ” is to be an event not in the history of religion but in the history of science, knowledge and enlightenment, do lighthouses have a future as the “monasteries” of a polycentric and – post-religious – world?
