Major event at the former Aegina Prison building

With a major event on Sunday morning at the historic Aegina Prison building, the Piraeus Regional Organizations of the Greek Communist Party and Greek Communist Youth and the Piraeus Branches of the Panhellenic Union of Fighters in the Greek Resistance and Democratic Army of Greece  paid tribute to the communists and other activists who were imprisoned, tortured, and executed in yet another labor camp of the bourgeois state, yet remained unbroken, drawing strength from their faith in the justice of the people and in socialism-communism.

The mass rally, which drew a large crowd of people of all ages—including many Aegina residents— simultaneously sent a defiant message of opposition to plans to distort historical memory.

Specifically, it protested the unacceptable decision by the government and the Attica Regional Authority to grant part of the historic building of the former Aegina Prison to an NGO for the creation of a “Pistachio Museum.”

The speaker at the event was Nikos Abatielos, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the KKE and the Party’s Member of Parliament for Piraeus 1st district, who emphasized: “Today we stand here with pride, filled with awe, emotion, and admiration for our comrades who passed through these cells. Most of them were held not in one but in many places of martyrdom and heroism for decades. Through their example, they have left behind an immense legacy—one that cannot be imprisoned or executed, but remains alive: that even under the harshest conditions of confinement, they kept alive their faith in a world without the exploitation of one human being by another, transforming the prison into a space for struggle, knowledge, collective strength, and action. We are here because this story is not over. Because the conflict between these two worlds—which was so vividly reflected in this place—continues today, in other forms, through other means, but with the same fundamental essence.”

The event was addressed by Nikos Fassas, a member of the Central Committee of the KNE and Secretary of the Piraeus Regional Organization of the KNE, and Nikos Triantafyllou, a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of the Imprisoned and Exiled. .
