Before and during the <a title=\"Congress of Vienna\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Congress_of_Vienna\">Congress of Vienna<\/a> in 1815 <a title=\"Ioannis Kapodistrias\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ioannis_Kapodistrias#Russian_diplomatic_service\">Ioannis Kapodistrias<\/a>, a native of Corfu in the service of Tsar Alexander I of Russia, laboured successfully for reorganisation of the Swiss Confederation and for the international recognition of Swiss neutrality.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Bilateral_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greece%E2%80%93Switzerland_relations#cite_note-Bilateral-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> In 1816, he became the first honorary citizen of the city of Lausanne<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greece%E2%80%93Switzerland_relations#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> and in 1827 the first Governor of the <a title=\"First Hellenic Republic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_Hellenic_Republic\">Hellenic State<\/a>. Switzerland was one of the nations that supported the <a title=\"Greek War of Independence\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greek_War_of_Independence\">creation of the Greek nation<\/a> in 1830. Two natives of <a title=\"Geneva\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Geneva\">Geneva<\/a> exercised important functions in the newly constituted Greek monarchy: <a title=\"Jean-Gabriel Eynard\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jean-Gabriel_Eynard\">Jean-Gabriel Eynard<\/a> as one of the founders of the <a title=\"National Bank of Greece\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Bank_of_Greece\">National Bank of Greece<\/a> (1842) and <a class=\"new\" title=\"Louis-Andr\u00e9 Gosse (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Louis-Andr%C3%A9_Gosse&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Louis-Andr\u00e9 Gosse<\/a> was involved in fighting the plague epidemic of 1827 and was a commander in the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Greek Navy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greek_Navy\">Greek Navy<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Bilateral_1-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greece%E2%80%93Switzerland_relations#cite_note-Bilateral-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>During the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Second World War\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_World_War\">Second World War<\/a>, Switzerland represented the interests of numerous countries in occupied Greece and supported the civilian population. During the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Greek military junta of 1967-1974\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greek_military_junta_of_1967-1974\">military dictatorship (1967-1974)<\/a> in Greece, many opposition figures found refuge in Switzerland. The <i>Swiss Committee for the Restoration of Democracy in Greece<\/i> was formed in <a title=\"Bern\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bern\">Bern<\/a> in 1967.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Bilateral_1-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greece%E2%80%93Switzerland_relations#cite_note-Bilateral-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Greece and Switzerland have a number of treaties between the two countries, mainly dealing with commerce.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greece%E2%80%93Switzerland_relations#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> Some of the major treaties between the countries deal with Social Security and the avoidance of double taxation in respect of income tax.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Ministry_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greece%E2%80%93Switzerland_relations#cite_note-Ministry-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Trade\" class=\"mw-headline\">Trade<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The balance of trade between Greece and Switzerland is generally toward Switzerland, with Greece having a constant trade deficit. Between 2006 and 2007 Swiss exports to Greece increased 12.9%, while Greek exports to Switzerland increased 26.4%.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Key_facts_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greece%E2%80%93Switzerland_relations#cite_note-Key_facts-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup> The main Swiss products imported into Greece are pharmaceuticals and medical supplies, watches, clocks and other luxury goods, machinery and high technology products, electronic equipment, and specific types of food.
