The star of that show was also a redhead, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, who was parachuted in in a similar way to what we see now in Adelaide.

May 1968 led to the overthrow of de Gaulle, who wanted to find an understanding with the Soviet Union similar to what many today, including high-level Americans, want to see with the Russia of Putin. Not that Putin is a continuation of the USSR. He wants to move on. Perhaps he even sees a grain of truth in the notion beloved of a section of the American right that Communism has been a construct of British intelligence.

But May 1968 also started as an attempt to “move on”, from Soviet Communism. A key thinker of what came to be known as “Frankfurt Marxism” (Cohn-Bendit also hung around in Frankfurt) was the Hungarian Marxist George Lukacs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_and_Class_Consciousness Lukacs has better answer for today than dogmatic libertarians.

But the brief post-1968 fashionability of his ideas among marginal intellectuals is not likely to be repeated.

Cohn-Bendit made a name for himself as a Green parliamentarian and also damaged that name by some of the activities he is alleged to have been involved in with young children. So what’s new?

It is noteworthy that in the Australian context Adelaide is emerging as the epicentre of this repetition reflex. Adelaide was not started by naval officers and convicts but by free men and women, of British and German origin with a lesser admixture of Irish than the eastern states. How is that freedom being played out today? Is it manifested as provinciality and pettiness?

The impulse to go “back to the roots” is important for people, and for states, that seem to be losing their bearings, or to have lost them. That is important in Greece, where I live, where the roots are not mainly in pagan antiquity, though there is a better market with foreign tourists for that notion, but with the founding of the modern Greek state in Aegina on 26th January 1828 by Greece’s assassinated first governor Ioannis Capodistrias.

https://main.cse-initiative.eu/?p=1873

The starting point for “European” settlement in Australia is the coming of the First Fleet and the founding, again on 26th January, in 1788 of the colony of New South Wales, followed up in 1823 by the establishment of the New South Wales Legislative Council.
